About the Author Marcia Reiss, the author of eight books about New York City history and architecture, has a long association with Brooklyn. She lived there, in Brooklyn Heights and Park Slope, for more than three decades and began writing about it in the 1970s as a reporter for the Brooklyn Phoenix newspaper. As a director for the New York City Department of Ports and Trade and later for the Parks Council, she worked on plans for converting Brooklyn’s vacant industrial waterfront to public parks and ferry landings. She also wrote a series of guides to historic Brooklyn neighborhoods for the Brooklyn Historical Society. More recent publications include New York Then and Now, Central Park Then and Now, Lost New York, and Lost Brooklyn. She taught at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Public and International Affairs and at Hunter College. She holds degrees in English from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and from New York University as a Woodrow Wilson Scholar. Read more
